Residential Lighting

Sachin Singh

Home environments need to make the residents feel comfortable while allowing for important tasks while accenting key areas of the home. Simply increasing brightness is not only a waste of electricity but is also not effective. The key is layering light and using contrast throughout the space.

Good lighting design turns a house into a home. It enhances the interior design and architecture. A house can have the most beautiful interior design and stunning architecture, but if the lighting is wrong it simply won’t feel like a home.

Types of Residential Lighting

There are several different types of Residential lighting, including

• Ambient lighting – a base level of functional light (such as downlights)

• Accent lighting – highlights key features and or details

 • Feature lighting – decorative pendants, table and floor lamps, wall lights, etc.

• Decorative lighting – fixtures are often meant to look attractive rather than provide much useful light. Wall sconces and chandeliers are the two most common decorative products.

 • Wall washing – puts light where we see it best – straight ahead on the walls – and is a great method of creating a soft ambient light.

• Surface Mounted fixtures are exposed, but remain close to - or flush with - the ceiling or wall and are popular in hallways and bedrooms.

 • Pendant fixtures are suspended by a cord, chain, cable, or other means and are popular over tables, kitchen islands, and in higher-ceiling areas.

 • Recessed lighting, usually in the form of downlights is typically found within a ceiling cavity. Recessed lighting can be used in virtually every room in the home.

• Track lighting answers the need for flexibility in location, quantity, and aiming angles. Track lighting has become much more sophisticated in function and appearance, with multiple, finishes, colors and styles and can be surface mounted on walls or ceilings or suspended.

 • Portable fixtures are defined typically by their cord, which can be plugged into any available electrical outlet Desk and bed lights, pole lights, etc.
